Dealing with Porn-Related Problems

It’s overwhelmingly men who experience problems, conflicts, and legal consequences for their porn use. One reason is simply that men use more porn. But, society at large fears male sexuality more, and especially fears the darker, more violent sides of male sexual fantasies. Beyond that, men experience problems around porn use, because men use porn and sex as a way to cope with negative feelings. Sadly, men receive little support or education around dealing with negative feelings, and in that loneliness and isolation, we can sometimes overuse a strategy that feels good. For all these reasons and more, men run into conflicts and problems around their porn use. Research and writing in this area has been stunted by decades of blaming porn, as opposed to exploring what the real conflicts and issues are. This section is just a start, sadly. As porn, technology, sex, and society constantly change, new fears, conflicts, and problems will arise. Not because of porn, but because of us. New solutions are needed, but they need to come from the same place of understanding behind these strategies. Behavior change is always easier, when shame and fear are removed from the issue.
